John F. Miglio started The Online Review of Books and Current Affairs in 2004 in order to publicize the writings and ideas he felt were being overlooked and unavailable to most readers. This included a surge in new books that technology was allowing independent presses to churn out, but that were not receiving attention from major book reviewing publications. It also included essays on politics and culture for a progressive viewpoint that were receiving increasingly less attention from a media landscape that had shifted to the center and the right of politics. Before starting The Online Review, John studied journalism at Temple University and taught the same subject at Cal State Northridge and Long Beach City College. John’s work has been featured in such publications as Los Angeles Magazine, LA Monthly, and The Democratic Underground. He has also been a guest on Air America Radio.
The Online Review of Books and Current Affairs was purchased by The Calico Media Group LLC in 2017 and completed its first issue under new ownership on May 1, 2017. We still retain many of the principles that John originally valued when he began the publication – a firm stance in support of the free expression of ideas, the unmatched benefits to the individual and society from exposure to those ideas and literacy, and a determination to support the human rights of the oppressed across the world.
Charlie Munger, the Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and one of the founders of the Los Angeles law firm Munger, Tolles & Olsen, once said, “In my whole life, I have known no wise people who didn’t read all the time – none, zero.” We agree. Even though we are amazed at the way ideas can be transmitted in a plethora of formats today, there is no substitute for being a good reader. It is our hope that our small publication can open doors to you that take you to places you have never been, shown you the lives of people you have never led, or changed your perspective with an idea you have never considered.
To accomplish our goals, we feature interviews with authors and others that have valuable perspectives, essays on current events, book reviews, and original fiction and poetry.
